Amanda Brugel
Pointe Claire in Montreal's West Island is a small, sleepy town. It is a part of the island that has been called "the West Island." West Island has a lot of communities. Many who've never heard of it often confuse it with a separate island facing west. Amanda Brugel was born there and her time was not long in the city. Brugel was raised in Courtice close to Oshawa Ontario. When she was a child she hoped to become professional performer, however an unexpected expansion of her body made it impossible. In an interview with the Toronto Star, she confessed that "In heels, I'm 6 feet 1 inches." When I grew out of my male partners, I quit. Brugel was one of many former dancers who turned into acting. Her teacher from high school was what pushed her to take the next step. She was recommended by a teacher to find a role in school's annual production. It was her choice to take on the principal role of Anne of Green Gables after she auditioned for. It led to the award of a Fine Arts Talent Scholarship at York University where she attended the Theater Program and earned the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2000. The career of Brugel spans more than twenty years, and she's performed in more than 60 shows, both on big screens and smaller ones. Her most recognizable role was the one of Rita (pictured in the below photo) in the television show The Handmaid's Tale. Brugel was the sole Canadian part of the cast for the season 1 of the series and not seen much.
